Dry needling is a minimally invasive physical therapy treatment method that involves inserting a thin, monofilament needle into myofascial trigger points.
Dry needling may seem like acupuncture since both treatments use similar monofilament needles, but dry needling goes deeper than the surface of the skin, focusing on internal triggers rather than external energy points. The needles do not contain any medication, hence the name dry needling. Your physical therapist may manually maneuver the needles to stimulate the trigger point or use an electric stimulation procedure, depending on what we think will work best for your condition.
Dry needling can help with acute or chronic problems affecting your muscles, ligaments, or tendons. A few common conditions that dry needling can ease include the following:
Nearly all physical therapy patients struggling with pain are candidates for dry needling because of its wide applications and minimal risks. However, this method may not be best if you’re pregnant, on blood thinners, recently had surgery in the area, have a compromised immune system, or wish to avoid needles. Our team can help you decide whether dry needling is right for your condition. Contact our team today to schedule a dry needling consultation
